MIPAS ozone successfully validated

MIPAS ozone successfully validated

The percentage bias between MIPAS ozone data processed at IMK and those of five selected comparison instruments are small in the stratosphere. In the mesosphere (above 50 km) and in the tropopause region (10-15 km) the deviations are larger but also the agreement between the comparison instruments is far less pronounced there.
This validation study assesses both biases and the precision of the measurements. A large number of comparison instruments was involved: the satellite-borne instruments ACE-FTS, GOMOS, HALOE, HIRDLS, IASI, MLS, OSIRIS, POAM, SAGE II, SBUV, SCIAMACHY, SMILES, SMR; ground-based Umkehr measurements and the balloon-borne Mark IV spectrometer. Better agreement with reference instruments than for the previous data version is found: the known high bias around the ozone vmr peak is significantly reduced and the vertical resolution at 35 km has been improved.

IMK wins MIPAS round robin

IMK wins MIPAS round robin

Within ESA's Climate Change Initiative, IMK MIPAS ozone data were chosen out of four independent data sets as best suitable MIPAS data product to be used for the "Essential Climate Variable Ozone". The figure shows particularly low standard deviations of the MIPAS IMK ozone product.
In the framework of ESA's Climate Change Initiative multiple ozone data sets are combined to form the "Essential Climate Variable Ozone". Four MIPAS datasets are available, provided by different institutions: the official ESA dataset, based on a data processor developed under leadership of IFAC-CNR in Florence, a dataset based on tomographical processing developed at Bologna University, an optimal estimation based dataset from Oxford University, and the ozone product generated with the research processor developed and operated by IMK in cooperation with the IAA-CSIC in Granada. Finally the project's round robin panel has selected the IMK algorithm. Read more »
